Water is structural at the Alhambra. Every principal court in the Nasrid Palaces is composed around a channel, a basin, or a still rectangle held level to the millimetre, fed by the Acequia Real, a canal drawn from the Darro river above the city.
The citadel was raised by the Nasrid dynasty from 1238, extended under Yusuf I and Muhammad V, and surrendered to Castile in 1492. Three centuries of building and one abrupt handover explain its doubled character: a military alcazaba, a palace city, and a Renaissance block set into the middle of it. Carved and tiled across nearly every surface is the Nasrid motto — wa-lā ghāliba illā Allāh, there is no victor but God — repeated thousands of times. Above, the Alcazaba's Torre de la Vela looks north to the Albaicín and south to the Sierra Nevada. Below the palaces, the Generalife's Patio de la Acequia keeps its long water axis and clipped myrtle.
Access is regulated rather than casual. The monument stands at C. Real de la Alhambra, s/n, 18009 Granada, Spain, opens 08:30–20:00, and admits adults on general admission at 19.09 EUR, covering all open areas.
